The threat to New York City’s community gardens becomes apparent as Elizabeth Street Garden fights to stay open amongst eviciton notices. The city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) wishes to replace Elizabeth Street Garden - which is currently issued a temporary stay of eviction - with 123 affordable housing units for seniors. Members of community gardens across the Lower East Side protest to save the garden’s fate which is to be reconsidered in February 2025. As Manhattan gets more congested, the relevant debate about whether it is more important to prioritise open natural spaces over affordable housing is brought to the forefront.
